Places to stay in San Martín de los Andes

The northern end of the Seven Lakes, on the shore of Lake Lácar.

San Martín de los Andes closes the corridor to the north: a town looked after down to the last detail, on the shore of Lácar and surrounded by Lanín national park. Chapelco, twenty minutes away, is its mountain — skiing in winter, biking and hiking the rest of the year.

The Seven Lakes route to Villa La Angostura starts (or ends) here, one of the finest drives in the country. Catritre beach, and the view of the Lanín volcano from the road to Hua Hum, are the postcards everyone takes home.

What “licensed” means on Aoni

On Aoni, only places to stay with a valid tourist accommodation licence are listed. The host uploads it, someone on the team checks it by hand and, until it's approved, the place can't be listed.

Licences expire, and the system keeps track: thirty days before, it notifies the host and, if the licence lapses without being renewed, the listing comes down until it is. So every place listed in San Martín de los Andes has its licence up to date, not just the one it had on the day it joined.

Where to stay in San Martín de los Andes

It's an alpine-style town on the eastern shore of Lake Lácar, within the Lanín National Park area: orderly and walkable, with almost everything a few blocks away.

  • The centre and the Lácar lakefront: to get around on foot, eat out and be close to the pier, where the boats to Quila Quina beach leave from.
  • The lakeshore towards Catritre and the road to Hua Hum: beach, forest and the view of the Lanín volcano from provincial route 48.
  • The Cerro Chapelco area, twenty minutes from town: the natural base if you're coming to ski, and for cycling and hiking the rest of the year.
  • Villa La Angostura, at the other end of the Seven Lakes Road: many split their stay between the two.

When to go

In winter, Cerro Chapelco takes centre stage; in summer, the Quila Quina and Catritre beaches, the short trails leaving from town and cycling.

July, with the Argentine winter holidays, and December to February are the busiest months across the corridor: if you're travelling then, book ahead. In autumn and spring there's more to choose from.

Getting there

By air, to Chapelco airport (Aviador Carlos Campos), about 20 km from town, with regular flights from Buenos Aires all year round; or to Bariloche, and from there about 3 hours along the Seven Lakes Road.

By road, National Route 40 arrives from the south along the Seven Lakes and from the north via Junín de los Andes; from Neuquén, on Routes 237 and 234. From Chile, through the Hua Hum crossing —with the Lake Pirihueico ferry on the Chilean side— or Mamuil Malal, which leaves from Junín de los Andes. Before you set off, check the conditions: the site shows every road section and border crossing with its source and the time of the latest reading.
