Bariloche, if you want everything at hand
The largest town in the corridor: the civic centre, restaurants, chocolate shops and the widest choice of tours leaving from town, such as the Circuito Chico and Llao Llao.
It suits you if you travel without a car, want places to eat out and things to do at night, or it's your first time in the area and you want to see a lot in a few days.
Villa La Angostura, if you're after calm
A well-kept mountain village on Lake Nahuel Huapi, with the Arrayanes Forest at its doorstep. It's quieter than Bariloche and a favourite for couples and families.
It's also the starting point of the Seven Lakes Road, so it makes sense if you plan to continue to San Martín de los Andes.
For skiing
- Bariloche: Cerro Catedral.
- Villa La Angostura: Cerro Bayo, smaller and family-friendly.
How to combine them
They're around 1 h 15 apart by car, along National Route 40 to the junction with Route 231, skirting the lake. Many travellers stay in one and spend a day in the other.
The nearest airport to Villa La Angostura is Bariloche's.
Before you set off
- Check today's conditions on Route 40 and Route 231: in winter there can be ice, snow or closures.
- If you're heading on to Chile, the Cardenal Samoré crossing is on the same Route 231.
